History
FoRT would like to state the obvious here: Rail trails started out as railways.
This is one of the coolest aspects of this particular type of trail. Every rail trail has a storied past.
Haliburton is a County shaped by its logging and railway past. Bringing that history to life was FoRT’s first initiative in 2007. Two companion films capture the whole story. See Railway Days. The railway line ran in Haliburton County for exactly one century from 1878 to 1978, bringing passengers, mail and cargo in and out of the Highlands.
Our Sunday Rambles often involve an element of storytelling right on the trail. There is one lunch annually with a history presentation. In May 2010, Ute Wright presented History of Donald 101. On May 29, 2011 Terry Carr will tell us about the glory days of Gelert. You can order tickets ($15) for this lunch at YMCA Wanakita NOW. Email or call in your reservation.
